Cushings & Bailey‚ Baltimore‚ 1864. First edition of this rare‚ first publication of the definitive version of the Gettysburg Address. It is the only copy of the Gettysburg Address that includes a title—“Address delivered at the dedication of the Cemetery at Gettysburg”—a date‚ and his full signature in facsimile. JOHN LOTHROP MOTLEY’S COPY‚ bearing an inscription by Elizabeth Gray Kennedy‚ wife of the editor John Pendleton Kennedy: “To the Honble. J.Lothrop Motley with the kind regards of E.G.Kennedy‚ Rome‚ March 11th 1868.” Alexander Bliss and John Pendleton Kennedy assembled and published the book to raise money for the Baltimore Sanitary Fair. They solicited many American authors‚ including Abraham Lincoln‚ Herman Melville and Edgar Allen Poe‚ to provide hand-written copies of examples of their works‚ which are here reproduced in facsimile. John Lothrop Motley (1814 –1877) the American diplomat‚ author‚ best known for his two popular histories The Rise of the Dutch Republic and The United Netherlands‚ contributed to this book his Letter to Wm. Amory Esq. upon the death of Mr. Prescott. Sabin no. 2467.

OCLC cites four copies of this uncommon printing‚ commenting: "Probably written & printed for a local charity bazaar." Variants exist in different sizes and colours. The poem consists of seven stanzas of four verses‚ beginning: “What wide extremes together meet ...”
