Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet de Belle-Isle (1684-1761)‚ Marshal of France‚ a major figure in the War of the Austrian Succession. At the head of 40‚000 French troops he crossed the Rhine in August 1741 to take control of Upper Austria. But later Belle-Isle found himself besieged in Prague‚ surrounded by an army of 60‚000 Austrians. He managed to extricate his army of 15‚000 men by leading them for ten days across treacherous defiles of ice and snow; 1200 died on the march from cold‚ and another 500 later from the effects of this march. King Louis XV made him Secretary of State for War in 1758‚ a position Belle-Isle would hold until his death in 1761.

With Prince Roland's death in Paris the senior line of the House of Bonaparte descending from Lucien Bonaparte became extinct in the male line. In 1886‚ Bonaparte was part of a scientific expedition that photographed and anatomically measured the Sami inhabitants of Northern Norway. Bonaparte Point in Antarctica was named after him by Jean-Baptiste Charcot.

He served in the Seven Years' War (1756–1763)‚ and as governor in the Antilles conducted operations against the British in the American Revolutionary War. He became Commander in Chief of the Army of the Meuse‚ Sarre and Moselle in 1790. He proposed to Louis XVI that the royal family should take refuge in a frontier town where an appeal could be made to other nations. When Louis XVI was arrested at Varennes (21 June 1791)‚ Bouillé went into exile in Russia and died in London in 1800. He is the 'Bouillé' alluded to in La Marseillaise.

In French. A good one page example‚ 7 x 6 inches Undated. Victor François de Broglie‚ 2nd duc de Broglie (1718 – 1804)‚ French aristocrat and a marshal of France. In the War of the Austrian Succession he took part in the storming of Prague in 1742‚ and was made a brigadier. In 1744 and 1745 he saw further service on the Rhine‚ and he succeeded his father as 2nd duc de Broglie on the old duke's death in 1745. He served with Marshal de Saxe in the Low Countries‚ and was present at Roucoux‚ Val and Maastricht. At the end of the war he was made a Lieutenant-general. During the Seven Years' War he was present at all the battles from Hastenbeck onwards. His victory over Prince Ferdinand at Bergen (1759) won him the rank of marshal of France from the French King Louis XV and the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire Reichsfürst from Emperor Francis I. In 1759 he won the Battle of Bergen and followed that with the capture the city of Minden‚ later fighting at the Battle of Minden under the command of Contades whom he would succeed in command. In 1760 he won an action at the Korbach‚ but was defeated at Villinghausen in 1761. After the war he fell into disgrace and was not recalled to active employment until 1778‚ when he was given command of the troops designed to operate against England. He played a prominent part in the French Revolution‚ which he opposed with determination; he commanded troops at Versailles in July 1789 and briefly served as Louis XVI's minister of war before fleeing France. After his emigration‚ the duc de Broglie commanded the "Army of the Princes" for a short time (1792).

In London‚ Cambon quickly became an important figure‚ helping to negotiate the Entente Cordiale between Britain and France in 1904‚ and serving as the French representative at the London Conference which resolved the Balkan Wars between 1912 and 1913. Upon the outbreak of the First World War‚ Cambon helped secure British intervention on the French side. He was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Légion d'honneur‚ and became a member of the French Academy of Sciences.

His first book‚ originally published in 1860‚ reappeared in 1864 under the title of Un Cheval de Phidias: it is a romantic study of art in the golden age of Athens. He went on to produce a series of novels. Most of these novels first appeared in the Revue des deux mondes‚ to which Cherbuliez also contributed a number of political and learned articles‚ usually printed with the pseudonym G Valbert. Many of these have been published in collected form under the titles L'Allemagne politique (1870)‚ L'Espagne politique (1874)‚ Profils étrangers (1889)‚ L'Art et la nature (1892)‚ etc. The volume Etudes de littérature et d'art (1873) includes articles for the most part reprinted from Le Temps.

In 1830‚ after the July Revolution‚ he became a Saint-Simonian‚ and edited their paper Le Globe. The paper was banned in 1832‚ when the "Simonian sect" was found to be prejudicial to the social order‚ and Chevalier‚ as its editor‚ was sentenced to six months imprisonment. After his release‚ Minister of the Interior Adolphe Thiers sent him on a mission to the United States and Mexico‚ to observe the state of industrial and financial affairs in the Americas. In Mexico he exchanged ideas with the mineralogist and politician Andrés Manuel del Río. It was during this trip that he also developed the idea that the Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking parts of the Americas shared a cultural or racial affinity with all the European peoples with a Romance culture. Chevalier postulated that this part of the Americas were inhabited by people of a "Latin race‚" which could be a natural ally of "Latin Europe" in its struggle with "Teutonic Europe‚" "Anglo-Saxon America" and "Slavic Europe." The idea was later taken up by French and Latin American intellectuals and political leaders of the mid- and late nineteenth century‚ who no longer looked to Spain or Portugal as cultural models‚ but rather to France‚ and who coined the term "Latin America. Together with Richard Cobden and John Bright he prepared the free trade agreement of 1860 between the United Kingdom and France‚ which is still called Cobden-Chevalier Treaty.

He commanded the Maison du Roi until its disbandment in 1792‚ after which he was charged by the Count of Provence with several diplomatic missions. De Coigny entered Portuguese service thereafter and returned to France on Napoleon’s abdication.

From birth he was known as the comte de La Marche. In 1750‚ La Marche was made a knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit at Versailles. During the Seven Years' War (1756–1763)‚ La Marche took part as a maréchal de camp in the Battle of Hastenbeck in July 1757 and in the Battle of Krefeld in June 1758. Pierre Beaumarchais noted in the preface to his 1778 play‚ The Marriage of Figaro (which satirized the aristocracy) that it was the late prince de Conti who requested the play be written‚ and Louis François Joseph's antics may have been the model for the misadventures of "Count Almaviva". Arrested by order of the National Convention in 1793‚ he was acquitted‚ but was reduced to poverty by the confiscation of his possessions. He afterwards received a pension. In 1797‚ however‚ the Directoire decided to exile the last of the Bourbons. He was banished to Spain along with his few remaining relatives who still lived in France and had not already been killed in the revolution. Relegated to a place near Barcelona‚ he lived in poverty. Refusing to share in the plots of the Royalists‚ he lived an isolated existence in Barcelona until his death in 1814‚ whereupon the Princes of Conti became extinct.

On February 24‚ 1848 he was chosen by the Republicans as a member of the provisional government‚ and as minister of justice he secured the decrees abolishing the death penalty for political offences. That same year he was instrumental in declaring an end to slavery in all French Colonies‚ for which some have called him the French Abraham Lincoln. When the conflict between the Republicans and Socialists broke out‚ he resigned office but continued to sit in the constituent assembly. At first he supported Louis Napoleon‚ but when he discovered the prince's imperial ambitions he broke with him.

Antoine Claude Nicolas Valdec de Lessart (1741-1792)‚ politician and minister during the French Revolution. On 4 December 1790‚ he was summoned to the Contrôle général des finances‚ then on 25 January 1791 moved to the Interior Minister‚ all the while holding onto the finance portfolio. He was made interim Naval Minister in September 1791 and interim minister of foreign affairs that October. He was indicted under Girondin pressure on 10 March 1792 .In August 1792 he was ordered with other prisoners to Paris for trial by the Revolutionary Tribunal. Claude Fournier-L'Héritier was charged with bringing them as far as Paris‚ but instead stopped at Versailles and massacred 44 of the 52 prisoners entrusted to him‚ including De Lessart.

In June 1817 he was appointed Marine Minister a pretext for him to resume the place of War Minister‚ which he did in September and continued to discharge till November 1819.

La Harpe was a disciple of the "philosophes"‚ supporting their extreme party through the excesses of 1792 and 1793. In 1793‚ he returned to edit the Mercure de France‚ which blindly adhered to the revolutionary leaders. Nonetheless‚ in April 1794‚ La Harpe was seized as a "suspect". In prison he underwent a spiritual crisis which he described in convincing language‚ emerging an ardent Catholic and a political reactionary. When he resumed his chair at the Lycée‚ he attacked his former friends in politics and literature. He was sufficiently imprudent to begin the publication of his 1774-1791 Correspondance littéraire in 1801 with the grand-duke (and later emperor) Paul of Russia. In these letters he surpassed the brutalities of the Mercure.

Gabriel-Jean-Joseph‚ comte Molitor (1770 – 1849)‚ Marshal of France. In 1793 Molitor was given command of a brigade and served under Hoche under whom he fought at Kaiserslautern and Wissembourg. In 1795‚ Molitor was severely wounded in the Battle of Mainz. In 1799‚ Molitor was sent to Switzerland where he fought under André Masséna against an Austro-Russian force led by Alexander Suvorov. In 1800‚ he fought in the Army of the Rhine under Moreau. Molitor was promoted to the rank of général de division in 1801. He was sent with Massena to Italy in 1805‚ where he served at Vago and Caldiero. In 1806 he took part in the relief of Republic of Ragusa. In 1807‚ Molitor was transferred to the German theatre of operations‚ where he served against the Swedes around Stralsund. He was then made governor of Pommern and was granted a comital title by Napoleon. In 1809 he was given command of a division in Massena's IV Corps and he saw action in the battles of Aspern and Wagram. In 1810 he was sent to occupy the cities of the Hanseatic League‚ from 1811 to 1813 he served in Holland‚ in the campaign of 1814 he served under MacDonald. After the abdication of Napoleon‚ Molitor made his submission to the Bourbons who made him Inspector-General of the infantry. Upon the return of the emperor from Elba‚ Molitor joined him during the Hundred Days. In 1823 he commanded the II Corps which was sent to Spain.

This court favour brought down punishment in the days of the French Revolution‚ and the old marshal‚ his sister‚ his wife‚ daughter-in-law and granddaughter were all guillotined on 27 June 1794. Twenty-five days later‚ the widow‚ daughter-in-law‚ and granddaughter of the 4th duc de Noailles were guillotined.

Gaston‚ Duke of Orléans (1608 – 1660)‚ was the third son of King Henry IV of France and his wife Marie de Medici. As a son of the king‚ he was born a Fils de France. He later acquired the title Duke of Orléans‚ by which he was generally known during his adulthood. As the eldest surviving brother of King Louis XIII‚ he was known at court by the traditional honorific Monsieur. He had nominal command of the army which besieged La Rochelle in 1628‚ having already entered upon a course of political intrigue that would occupy the remainder of his life. He was the heir presumptive to the throne of France from the death of his brother Nicolas Henri in 1611 until the birth of his elder brother's first son in 1638. On two occasions‚ he had to leave France for conspiring against the government of his mother and her Prime Minister Cardinal Richelieu. After waging an unsuccessful war in Languedoc leading to the Battle of Castelnaudary in 1632‚ he took refuge in Flanders. Reconciled with his brother Louis XIII‚ he plotted against Richelieu in 1635‚ fled from the country again‚ and then submitted to the King and the Cardinal. Gaston was the father of the famous Madame de Montpensier.

Dubbed “Mademoiselle Baudelaire” by Maurice Barres‚ she was called a pornographer by Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly. Rachilde and her husband‚ Alfred Vallette‚ were some of the most influential people in the symbolist and decadent community in Paris. They started the Mercure de France and hosted salons every Tuesday afternoon where young artists could come and meet established writers‚ such as Oscar Wilde who was inspired in part by Rachilde's book Monsieur Venus. This presentation statement was prepared for publication in the famous anthology Pax Mundi. Livre D'or De La Paix (Geneva‚ 1932)‚ which contained numerous autograph facsimile statements about the prospects for World Peace. It was prepared by the World League for Peace with the approval of the League of Nations.
