Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834)‚ Anglo-German bookseller‚ inventor‚ lithographer‚ publisher and businessman. In 1809 he applied his press to the illustration of his Repository of Arts‚ Literature‚ Fashions‚ which appeared monthly until 1829‚ when forty volumes had appeared. Thomas Rowlandson and other distinguished artists were regular contributors. Repository documented the changing classicising fashions in dress and furniture of the Regency. He also introduced the fashion of the once popular Literary Annuals‚ beginning in 1823 with Forget-Me-Not; and he published many illustrated volumes of topography and travel‚ including The Microcosm of London (3 volumes‚ 1808–1811)‚ Westminster Abbey (2 volumes‚ 1812)‚ The Rhine (1820) and The World in Miniature (43 volumes‚ 1821–6).

Vellum‚ 5 x 7½ inches‚ one filing hole‚ generally in good condition.With a small engraved portrait of Audran. 1710. Benoît Audran the Elder‚ engraver‚ the second son of Germain Audran‚ was born at Lyons in 1661. He received his first instruction in the art of engraving from his father; but had afterwards the advantage of studying under his uncle‚ the celebrated Gérard Audran. Although he never equalled the admirable style of his uncle‚ he engraved many plates of historical subjects and portraits‚ which have justly established his reputation. His style‚ like that of Gérard‚ is bold and clear; his drawing of the figure is very correct; and there is a fine expression of character in his heads. He was received into the Academy in 1709‚ and was appointed engraver to the king‚ with a pension. He died in 1721‚ in the village of Ouzouer‚ near Sens. His portrait‚ after J. Vivien‚ has been engraved by his nephew Benoit‚ the younger.

London‚ 6 September 1808. Uncommon. Henry Aston Barker (1774–1856)‚ landscape and panorama painter and exhibitor. He frequently travelled in the course of his work‚ and in August 1799 left England for Turkey‚ to make drawings for a panorama of Constantinople. At Palermo‚ he called on Sir William Hamilton‚ the English ambassador to the court of Naples‚ who introduced him to Lord Nelson‚ who‚ he wrote‚ "took me by the hand and said he was indebted to me for keeping up the fame of his victory in the Battle of the Nile for a year longer than it would have lasted in the public estimation" (Barker's memoranda). The panorama of Constantinople was exhibited in 1802‚ and the drawings were engraved and published in four plates. In 1801‚ Barker went to Copenhagen to make drawings for a picture of the battle‚ and while there he was again received by Nelson. In May 1802‚ during the Peace of Amiens‚ he went to Paris and made drawings for a panorama of the city. After this many other panoramas were exhibited‚ including the Coronation Procession of King George IV.

In this position‚ he engraved and designed French medals‚ the Great Seal of France‚ bank notes and postage stamps. He is named Jean-Jacques Barre in numismatic publications and Jacques-Jean Barre in philatelic ones. From the late 1840s until 1855‚ he created the first two French postage stamp designs: the Ceres series and Napoleon III series. His two sons‚ artists themselves‚ succeeded him at the post of general engraver.

'Azaleas ' and "Camellias" are in the South Kensington Museum. Bartholomew held for many years the post of Flower Painter in Ordinary to the Queen from 1837.

Cetonia R.Y.S.‚ Cowes‚ 10 August 1885. Uncommon. Sir Oswald Walters Brierly (1817 - 1894)‚ English marine painter. In 1841 Brierly started round the world with Benjamin Boyd (1796–1851)‚ afterwards well known as a great Australian squatter‚ in the latter's ship Wanderer‚ and having got to New South Wales‚ made his home at Boyd's private whaling and trading village of Boyd Town in Twofold Bay on the New South Wales coast for ten years. He managed Boyd's whaling operations. Brierly Point is called after him. He sailed on numerous expeditions including the Rattlesnake voyage surveying the Barrier Reef. When the Crimean War broke out in 1854‚ Keppel gave Brierly an observational post on his new steam line-of-battle ship‚ St Jean d'Acre‚ in the Baltic Fleet. The Illustrated London News commissioned Brierly to sketch Allied naval operations. In 1855 the St Jean d'Acre went to the Black Sea‚ and Brierly went with her. Though Brierly did not stay with her; he worked on several ships in the Black Sea. In 1856 a series of lithographs of his sketches were published as Portfolio of Marine and Coastal Sketches by Mr. William Brierly.

He became a very successful illustrator of books authors such as Jonathan Swift‚ William Thackeray‚ Jane Austen‚ and George Eliot. He is best known for his line work‚ initially working in the tradition of Hugh Thomson‚ but he was also a skilled colourist. He and his brothers maintained a Cambridge studio filled with various curios‚ antiques‚ furniture‚ and a costume collection.

Recently discovered in an album compiled by Walter Goodman. Venice‚ 22 November and 20 December 1876. Uncommon. Joaquín Cuadras (1843–1877)‚ Cuban painter. In 1861 Cuadras met fellow artist Walter Goodman whilst copying Old Master paintings at the Uffizi palace in Florence and the two became friends. They travelled to Barcelona in 1862 and arrived in London a year later. In 1864 he travelled to Cuba with Walter Goodman. Between 1868 and 1869 Cuadras was director of Academia de Dibujo de Santiago de Cuba. There are examples of Cuadras' work in the Museo Bacardi in Santiago de Cuba. Joaquín Cuadras died in Rome in January 1877. One letter is annotated “Joaquin Cuadras’s last letter to W.G.” Walter Goodman (1838-1912) dedicated his travel book about Cuba‚ The Pearl of the Antilles‚ to Joaquin Cuadras.

Norwich‚ 1 May 1834. Edward Thomas Daniell (1804 – 1842)‚ landscape painter and etcher. He grew up in Norfolk and was ordained as a priest. He is best known for his drawings made on an expedition to Lycia‚ in the course of which he died. Inspired by the example of David Roberts‚ he set out for the East in 1840. He was in Greece at the end of the year‚ crossed to Egypt early in 1841‚ travelled up the Nile to Nubia‚ then from Egypt to Palestine‚ and on to Syria‚ reaching Beirut in October. In Smyrna he fell in with an English party on board H.M.S. Beacon‚ which had been sent by British Government to Lycia to bring home antiquities discovered by Sir Charles Fellows at Xanthos‚ for the British Museum. Daniell joined the expedition and spent the winter at Xanthos. When Fellows left‚ he remained behind to make a more thorough survey of the country. Daniell produced a series of sixty-four drawings‚ now in the British Museum‚ recording their journey.

Francis Isaac Du Roveray (1772-1849)‚ Huguenot connoisseur and publisher of illustrated books. “You are not perhaps aware that one reason of [the Westall drawings] being so given away at the sale was (and Palmer’s[?] son acknowledged it to me) a combination between him & young White not to bid against each other; an act clearly illegal‚ and which ought to be reprobated by yourself as well as by me‚ and indeed by every liberal-minded person. To come more decidedly to the point‚ however‚ as things turned out‚ I would now let you have the Eloisa & Shepherd’s Boy for £50‚ but no less ...” The Turner drawing could be part exchanged for a Stothard drawing‚ provided the Turner is not faded‚ such as one now on sale “which formerly belonged to me‚ and of which I therefore think myself a tolerably competent judge‚ without appealing to Turner himself‚ who is interested in establishing the opinion that his drawings do not fade.” The sales pitch never ceases: “Of all my Westall drawings‚ the Eloisa has every been my greatest favourite‚ but I thnk that‚ upon the whole‚ the Shepherd’s Boy has been the most admired.”

In December 1854 Goodall was appointed war artist in the Crimea for the Illustrated London News. He witnessed the battles at the Alma and Balaclava‚ and the Siege of Sebastopol. Hampstead‚ 4 May 1883. Carl Haag (1820-1915) was a German-born painter who became a naturalized British citizen‚ and court painter to the duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He is known for his Oriental subjects. He was born in Erlangen (Bavaria)‚ and was trained in the academies at Nuremberg and Munich. Haag practised first as an illustrator and as a painter‚ in oil‚ of portraits and architectural subjects; but after he settled in England‚ in 1847‚ he devoted himself to water colours‚ and was elected associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1850 and member in 1853. He travelled much‚ especially in the East‚ and made a considerable reputation by his firmly drawn and carefully elaborated paintings of Eastern subjects. Towards the end of his professional career Carl Haag quitted England and returned to Germany where he died in Oberwesel.

Adopting his father's profession‚ he practised miniature-painting‚ and exhibited at the Royal Academy at intervals between 1802 and 1840; but‚ like his father‚ he mainly devoted himself to making water-colour copies of historical portraits. Harding visited family seats of the nobility‚ royal palaces‚ and college halls. He produced highly finished copy portraits. Other letters addressed to Harding are preserved in the Huntington Library. William Havell (1782–1857)‚ landscape painter‚ was invited in 1805 to become one of the founder members of the new Society of Painters in Water Colours and remained an active member and exhibitor until 1816‚ specializing in lakeside and Thames subjects. After a row with the British Institution‚ Havell took on a commission to accompany William Pitt‚ Earl Amherst of Arracan‚ on an embassy to China which departed in February 1816. After landing in August that year‚ Lord Amherst was abruptly dismissed for refusing to kowtow‚ in the Chinese court. Thus Havell was left in China without purpose or protector. He quickly obtained a passage to India and was established in Madras by 1820‚ where he supported himself by painting portraits; he also turned his hand to sketching landscapes and scenes of local life. Later Havell developed an interest in early photography and read a paper to the Chalon Society in 1839. [ODNB]

Little is known of Huggins' early life but he was recorded as being a sailor in the service of the East India Company.

Docketed 26 November 1816. Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817)‚ landscape and watercolour painter. Ibbetson's thirty years as an exhibitor of landscapes and genre scenes at the Royal Academy began in 1785 with View of North Fleet. George Biggin of 1783 (Yale U. CBA) is one of Ibbetson's earliest known works and‚ as an accomplished full-length portrait in the Gainsborough tradition‚ should be considered as a milestone in the development of an artist who was entirely self-taught. Through the connoisseur Captain William Baillie‚ Ibbetson was appointed draughtsman to Colonel Charles Cathcart on the first British embassy to Peking (Beijing) in 1787‚ and he made numerous watercolour drawings of the fauna and the scenery en route‚ for example False Bay‚ Cape of Good Hope (V&A). Benjamin West accurately dubbed him the ‘Berchem of England’ in acknowledgement of his debt to the Dutch seventeenth-century landscape painters. His watercolours are prized for their delicacy and sureness of line; many were engraved for such diverse projects as John Church's publication A Cabinet of Quadrupeds‚ and John Boydell's Shakspeare Gallery. Undated. Uncommon. Ebenezer Landells (1808 –1860)‚ wood-engraver‚ illustrator‚ and magazine proprietor‚ was apprenticed to the wood-engraver Thomas Bewick. In 1829 he moved to London‚ and before long managed to start his own engraving workshop. After attempting a short-lived fashion journal‚ Cosmorama‚ he joined with the journalist Henry Mayhew and the printer William Last to found Punch in 1841. Initial difficulties forced Landells to sell his one-third share to the publishers Bradbury and Evans: after the new owners replaced Landells with Joseph Swain as engraving chief‚ Landells responded with a pamphlet A Word with Punch (1847). Landells was also involved in several other magazines: the less successful Illuminated Magazine (1843–35)‚ Great Gun (1844‚ in imitation of Punch)‚ the Lady's Newspaper (1847–63‚ after which incorporated in the Queen)‚ Diogenes (1853‚ another attempt to imitate Punch)‚ and the Illustrated Inventor. Responding to the growth in the children's book market‚ he wrote and illustrated several books for children: Boy's Own Toy-Maker (1858)‚ Girl's Own Toy-Maker (1859)‚ and Illustrated Paper Model Maker (1860).

Early in his career Le Jeune painted biblical themes‚ such as the Liberation of the Slaves (1847)‚ purchased by Prince Albert and now in the Royal Collection at Osborne House‚ as well as literary themes often drawn from Shakespeare (Prospero and Miranda‚ 1844) or Spenser (Una and the Lion‚ 1842). Meadows spent much of his time visiting friends and drinking gin. He was a friend of many prominent writers‚ including Charles Dickens‚ Henry Vizetelly and William Godwin. William Powell Frith once described him as "perhaps the best" of Punch's early illustrators.

Medland was successful with a set of illustrations to Robinson Crusoe from designs by Thomas Stothard (1790). His largest plate was Evening of the Glorious First of June‚ after Robert Cleveley.

In 1783 appeared the first number of his Views of Seats in Ireland‚ a series of twenty-four plates from drawings by William Ashford‚ John James Barralet‚ Francis Wheatley‚ and others; this work‚ which made Milton's reputation‚ was completed in 1793. From then on he seems to have relied on commissions from publishers. His other major plate was The Deluge‚ engraved for Thomas Macklin's Bible from a picture by Philip James de Loutherbourg. His work occurs also in John Boydell's‚ George Kearsley's‚ and George Steevens's editions of Shakespeare‚ and William Young Ottley's Stafford Gallery 1818. In 1801 appeared Views in Egypt‚ a series of coloured aquatints; the subtitle clarifies that it was from original drawings in owned by Sir Robert Ainslie‚ taken during his embassy to Constantinople by Luigi Mayer‚ engraved by and under Milton.

In 1823 he exhibited at the royal academy 'Don Quixote in his Study‚' the first of the subject-pictures drawn from poetry or romance with which his name was subsequently identified. It was followed by 'M. de Pourceaugnac‚ or the Patient in Spite of Himself (1824)‚ 'The Dull Lecture ' (1825)‚ and 'Captain Macheath upbraided by Polly and Lucy' (1826); this last picture was purchased by the Marquis of Lansdowne‚ who also collected at Bowood 'The Vicar of Wakefield reconciling his Wife to Olivia' (1828) and 'Polly Peachum.' Two pictures‚ 'The Forsaken' and ' The Lover's Quarrel‚' were engraved in The Literary Souvenir for 1826‚ with verses by Miss L. E. Landon; the latter was in the Dover House collection‚ and‚ with 'The Adieu' and another picture by Newton‚ was sold at Christie's on 6 May 1893. 'The Prince of Spain's Visit to Catalina' (1827) was purchased by the Duke of Bedford and engraved in 'The Literary Souvenir' for 1831.

He studied at South Kensington and the Royal Academy‚ and then in Antwerp. Schmalz lived close to Lord Leighton and married the sister of Dorothy Dene‚ one of Leighton’s favourite pupils. He developed a Pre-Raphaelite style‚ and produced a number of Orientalist pictures. Following a visit to Jerusalem in 1890 his travel sketches were published in the Art Journal in 1893 under the title A Painter’s Pilgrimage.

In this he submitted a picture of Boadicea Harranguing the Iceni which won a premium of £200 in 1843. He was aided by the knowledge of mural technique he had acquired by working for a panorama painter.

Solomon exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1881 and began to make a name for himself as a portraitist and as a painter of biblical‚ mythological‚ and genre subjects. In 1910 he published a book‚ The Practice of Oil Painting and Drawing. During the First World War Solomon helped the French with their work on camouflage and to set up a British camouflage section in Flanders. Two years later he set up a camouflage school in Kensington Gardens‚ London‚ working on concealment from the air of very large areas of terrain. His book Strategic Camouflage was published in 1920.

He is also considered a Chilean painter as he began his career there and many of his landscapes evoke the region. His father was a shipmaster‚ who sketched‚ and his uncle was an amateur painter. However he had no formal training as an artist and originally became a schoolmaster in the Royal Navy. He also travelled around the Pacific and while teaching in Valparaíso he started working as a professional painter.

Cranbrook‚ Staplehurst‚ 16 December 1877. Thomas Webster (1800-1886)‚ painter‚ frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His pictures are well known from engravings. His father was a member of the household of George III; and the son‚ having shown an aptitude for music‚ became a chorister in the Chapel Royal‚ St James's. He‚ however‚ developed a still stronger love for painting‚ and in 1821 he was admitted student of the Royal Academy‚ to whose exhibition he contributed‚ in 1824‚ portraits of "Mrs Robinson and Family." In the following year he gained the first medal in the school of painting. Till 1879 he continued to exhibit in the Royal Academy work of a genial and gently humorous character‚ dealing commonly with subjects of familiar incident‚ and especially of child life. Many of these were exceedingly popular‚ particularly his "Punch" (1840)‚ which procured in 1841 his election as ARA. Webster was leader of a group of artists who called themselves "The Cranbrook Colony".

He also gained the silver medal of the Royal Academy‚ for a die with the head of Apollo. On 10 January 1831 Wyon was appointed Chief Engraver of the Seals and made the Great Seal of William IV.
